Today, I attended the monthly Bitcoin meet-up. It was a packed house. You can see the growth in the crowds over time, as popularity in the space continues to soar. The topic today was Bitcoin versus Bitcoin Cash. It was highly entertaining, riddled with conspiracy theory and some high emotion from both sides. One thing was clear, the intention of Bitcoin being used as a currency is unfeasible at this time with the exorbitant amount paid in fees. Gino’s Barber Shop is a sponsor of the event, and Alex from Ginos mentioned that a patron recently spent an additional 50% of the cost of the haircut in fees to transact in Bitcoin. He mentioned the need for support of Bitcoin Cash by Bitpay, which is rumored to be coming soon.

From a GigLabs perspective, there was one thing that stood out to me as I listened and gathered information from the various people in attendance. There is a high demand for developers in the blockchain space and a big lack of developers moving into these newly created jobs. There were calls for developers from companies such as Patientory, Tierion, and Bitcoin Depot. We saw this need for developers last week at the North American Bitcoin Conference as well when interacting with vendors and enterprises at the conference.

There is a need that we intend to help solve with our first marketplace, GigApps, which will be built on the GigEx platform this spring. GigApps will make available, teams of developers that use the marketplace for hire to do contracted gigs using the platform. These teams will accept payment in crypto to help fill this gap for organizations. The team’s members will also receive the benefits that are provided by the GigEx platform as part of the solution. On our website we are currently accepting Beta applicants for both our development teams and projects that could use a hand with blockchain development.
