Reflection

Why we need service design, how system of a certain things work, what is the infrastructure. The studio for me began with such questions and probing into them was the major deal. What I began searching was how can all the 3 terms Service, System and Infrastructure can be related to each other and how can we probe into them. To look into them we started with the myGate services and to probe into it. The idea behind the ‘probe’ was to understand the service system of gated communities and what possible intervention can be done to understand the concept of apps like mygate ,apna complex.

Understanding the working of MyGate

Our team started with understanding about the mygate app and what services it offers after which we decided to select one aspect of it and to probe into that area of mygate. In the beginning, it was difficult for us to understand the area of our probe as the app has a very structured services and system. But after going through it and learning about the app we wanted to look into the data privacy. The area that we chose to work on initially started with the security gaps in the gated community which are overlooked by the mygate.

We wanted to look into the security gaps when migrating to myGate platform — be it physical security of the society and its residents or the security of data that such platforms collect.

This studio I have unraveled about service system and infrastructure in different folds:

Scenarios studied of the residents of Gated Community

Investigating:

After selecting the area of research I investigated about the mygate through real based scenarios, interviews and through some secondary means i.e- referring articles and papers.

This fold helped me in understanding the basics of my topic and opened up certain opportunity or the possible gaps to look into.

Method: At first we picked up a hit and trial method which was just to probe into the data privacy. This method made me realize there is more to the data privacy to scratch in. Hence we decided to go for Research through design method. Through this method we designed a hypothetical situation to make the security guard react and can get data accordingly. This I had learned about how to retrieve information through design by making people interact or act in certain scenarios.

Process: The process take by us was to interact with the residents of gated community and get maximum data from them. Also we looked into the most unlooked or rare cases. This way we can use the data to help the residents or propose the certain improvements in Mygate services.

Technique: I believe my major learning in this studio came from the techniques that we used to probe. It was indeed challenging since I didn’t know the service design tools. We were left to explore and understand what possible tools can aid us in probing to our topic.Certain examples that I referred to gave me a sense of using tools. It showed me what tools are best fitted for the certain scenarios.

Output:As we have mentioned our artifact and final deliverables and proposal in article-https://medium.com/gigs-service-systems-platforms-and-design/probing-into-customised-data-patterns-38802d66e2a5

This studios gave me huge amount of learnings through case studies and software classes like R. My learnings are done for this studios through these folds. I feel Our faculties (Naveen Bagalkot & Venkat) have delivered us the right amount of knowledge on-

  1. Data evaluation
  2. How to probe
  3. Data collection techniques

4. What is service design and its tools

For me this studio has been a great learning experience, This studio has opened up about how to develop and execute certain services or even while probing what all things should be kept in mind and what all tools we should know or use when probing into services. I am satisfied with the information given to us and my questions that I had began with was answered in this studio. My faculties have been patient and supportive to me and my team through out the studio. Now I finally can understand what service system and infrastructure means. But, as we say more is less, I feel we could have this studio stretched for 1–2 week more as this would have encouraged us to go deeper into the service design and thinking. Also I would like to add we can make this studio more interactive and information derived by inducting a doubt session. Which could have benefited in clear understanding about our topic. At last I would like to conclude I have understood the concept of service system and infrastrcute and I feel motivated to carry forward this project in future.
