Are you looking for someone to get your job done without having a need to give them a position in your company? Today I’ve got some advice for you, those who are looking to hire a freelancer, whether you are trying to hire a freelance graphic designer, a freelance video editor, a freelance writer or an individual for a project basis. Some precautions need to be taken into consideration in order to ensure success and smooth completion of projects.

Hiring freelancers come up with a number of uncertainties including is the freelancer legit, will he complete the task on time? Will he even complete the task? Or is he knows how to keep things confidential? Are only a few of many concerns you should have. Going back to few years, I used to face the similar challenges. Today, I am going to share my experience that what I’ve learned in last few years as someone who hires freelancers online or outsources online.

Take responsibility

First of all, hiring people is a really important skill, this is something that you learn as you go by. Do not just work with anyone or trust every other freelancer. The freelance community is jam-packed with scammers.

Communicate Thoroughly

Communicate to understand the freelancer. Do an interview on a Skype and then decide if you want to work with them or not. Trusting blindly is the most foolish act as an entrepreneur you can commit.

In the process of hiring, you need to have a strong communication skill because sometimes when they deliver the work, you’re like no, this isn’t what I’ve asked for, it happens due to miscommunication, aside from communication, always be responsible for your actions.

Hire the Best Match

You have to accept that you’ll make many mistakes along the way and you’ll probably hire some crappy people as well, okay, there are good freelancers as well as there are crappy freelancers so you as an entrepreneur should be in charge and you should be able to hire only the best people for your business and for your projects.

You should be able to do your best from your side to be a good client, communicate your requirements clearly and let the freelancer analyze if it is his kind of job or not. Tell them exactly what you want and make sure they know what to do, sometimes you may leave it to their expertise but make sure you clarify what it is that you want because they are not the mind readers.

Maintain a Sound Work Relationship

We’re going to cover few things you need to know, and I think this is going to be helpful for the far majority of you, especially if you’re dabbling in something or you’re running a small business. One of the ways that I strongly recommend is that you get a referral from a trusted friend, business partner, or somebody that’s already on your network. If somebody in your network has already used a freelancer for their services, then probably it’s going to be one of the best relationships you can have. So that’s probably where you need to start. Ask a friend, a family member, or somebody that you look up to or that you know who has hired for this kind of thing before. Ideally, I would prefer that you have a personal one-on-one relationship with somebody that you want to hire, but that’s not always going to be a practical answer or an answer that gets things done quickly enough for you.

Take Precautions — Things to Note Down

Always remember to never give freelancers the access to your bank accounts, your PayPal accounts, and your debit/credit card and demand their legal verification ID.

Sign a non-competition-agreement and a non-disclosure agreement with the freelancer which means that they are going to sign that they are not going to create a completive store or website or business that is in the same industry and market that you are in.

With a non-disclosure agreement, you can keep your hired freelancer to stay put and not discuss any of your business related information that is not meant for any unauthorized person to access.

This method is not going to protect your work from being copied and people doing like that, but it’s going to lower the risk because they’re going to be scared and you’ll have the leverage as you have those documents signed.

Never Pay in Full

Finally, let’s talk about how to make sure you are getting what you’ve paid for. Ultimately you should put some kind of review process for approval in place for final payment, and it should be cleared that how many revisions you’re allowed as a client. Do not make the assumption of assuming you have unlimited revisions or that you’re entitled to that. Getting a deposit in place and then holding the remainder of the money until the project is completed is the best case scenario in term of making sure you’re getting what you paid for in terms of getting the final files.
