Juneteenth is finally here, and people across the country are set to celebrate the holiday with barbecues, community service, and teach-ins about the country’s “second Independence Day.”

This year marks 159 years since the last enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation. Since its inclusion as the United States’ 12th national federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has become a fixture in communities across the country, often marked as an opportunity to learn about the day’s significance and support local Black businesses.

To celebrate Juneteenth this year, GIPHY Arts commissioned Auna Smith — also known as The Goldsmyth—for several GIFs capturing the essence of the holiday, featuring references to barbecue, jazz, and the Juneteenth flag created by activist Ben Haith. Smith is a “multidisciplinary creative” who has worked on “motion graphics, social content, merchandise, videos, […] illustrations and more.”

Below, you’ll find Smith’s Juneteenth commission, as well as several GIFs from Smith’s GIPHY page.
