A month-by-month breakdown of food-related searches on GIPHY in 2024 shows that users are extra hungry in April. Searches for “munchies” and “snacks” peak in April every year, with April 20th standing out as the single day when cravings spike the most.
It’s 4:20 Somewhere
Zooming in further, April 20th is consistently the single most snack-obsessed day on GIPHY. On 4/20 specifically, searches for “pizza,” “fries,” “chips,” “donuts,” and “brownies” all peaked compared to the rest of the month. Among those terms, “fries” saw the largest day-over-day growth on April 20th, with a 55% spike in searches.
The Snack Surge Starts Early
Like Christmas decorations going up before Thanksgiving, it seems that people start getting in the 4/20 spirit earlier and earlier. Last year, searches for “munchies” and “snacks” reached their highest point in April, but began gaining traction in March.
People also begin searching for specific foods in March, with some terms peaking in April compared to the rest of the year:

- Ice Cream: +28%
- Taco: +16%
