Johnny Depp’s Win is a Win for Real Domestic Violence Victims

For the past six weeks, I have been watching the Johnny Depp trial. It quickly became part of my ritual to have it playing on my iPad while I was working each day. After dropping my kids off at school, I would grab my coffee and eagerly tune in.
At first, I tuned in out of curiosity. When I first heard the rumors about Johnny Depp, it was around the time they announced he wouldn’t be in the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts movies. I remember waiting with bated breath to hear about more women that were coming forward with claims. If there is one thing we have learned from the #MeToo movement, it is that if there is one, there will be more.
We saw it with Bill Cosby, Chris Noth, Harvey Weinstein, and even Kevin Spacey. But more claims never came, and I struggled inwardly about supporting Johnny Depp, an actor I had loved since childhood, and standing up for a fellow survivor of domestic abuse.
When I started watching the trial, I didn’t know what truly happened between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp.
And to be clear, no one does, not really, except for them. The jury and the world were given glimpses of what their marriage was like through audio records…
