Well, you might be hearing a lot about GSSoC on various social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. So, you might be curious to know what exactly is GSSoC and what it has to offer. So, today, we the organizers of GSSoC are going to quench your curiosity.

So, GSSoC stands for GirlScript Summer of Code. GirlScript Summer of Code is a 3-month long Open Source program during summers conducted by GirlScript Foundation, started in 2018, with an aim to help beginners get started with Open Source Development while encouraging diversity. Throughout the program, participants contribute to different projects under the guidance of experienced mentors. Top participants get exciting goodies and opportunities.

Our mentees come from a variety of backgrounds with just one goal, i.e to learn and help the open-source community grow. We had around 3% of international mentee participating in GSSoC’19.

What did we achieve in 2019?

GirlScript Summer of Code 2019 witnessed overwhelming registration of 1500+ participants and around 100 mentors.

Coding has no barriers, this year we had 9% of international mentorship. The perfect blend of student and professional mentors helped us to scale better and bigger.

Open source is an ocean with no barriers in place, this year we saw around 66% of our mentees from tier 2/3 colleges. With 41% of participants coming from non-CSE or related background. 94.9% of our participants were students.

After the rigorous shortlisting process, with 24 open source projects, GSSoC kick-started. With over 1000+ PR’s merges within 3 crucial months.

20 independent and 4 NGO projects took part in GSSoC’19. Projects covered a wide variety of tech stack, with JavaScript being most popular stack, followed by Python. Other stack included Java, Flutter, C/C++, Go, RoR covering many technologies like Android, Web development, Machine learning etc.
