Find Engineers Who Already Have Code in Your Company
Finding good engineers is hard. In reality good engineers are hiding in plain sight. Many engineers whether working for a company or to scratch a personal itch release their code to the world through open source code. Most contemporary companies use open source code in some fashion within their software. To reach these engineers is a matter of finding out what open source projects your company uses.
Why seek out engineers who have worked on open source projects used in your company? There is a difference in what engineers want versus what the companies want from their engineers. Good engineer love working on tools that they built. It is a source of pride. Not only do they want that, a good engineer wants to work on code that can be released as open source.
Companies, however, have different wants. They, first, want engineers who can pick up their code base and be productive quickly. They want engineers who can traverse different types of code and learn quickly. Last, but not least, they want engineers who have experience with the esoteric technologies they use. The only way to find engineers like these is to explore the open source code they’ve released to find them.
Therefore, to find good engineers that companies want and companies that engineers want to join, companies should find engineers who already have their code within the company’s walls through open source code.
