And it makes all feel all warm and fuzzy…

TL;DR

Gitter is no longer beta. We’re launching paid plans next week. Public conversations will always be free. Your existing private rooms will continue to be accessible without paying.

To everyone who has signed up to date, you’re all awesome and we’ll send out discount codes to you all as a thank you for making Gitter what it is today. Do get in touch if you have any questions.

Such awesome. Tell me more.

We launched Gitter in beta early this year and what an amazing journey it’s been so far. We now have nearly 25 000 developers signed up and have delivered 1.7M chat messages. Most importantly, we have over 7 000 public rooms on Gitter and it’s awesome to see how responsive and helpful so many of our communities are.

We’ve been hard at work building out features and making sure the application is rock solid and dependable. We’ve fixed numerous bugs, tweaked various tweaky bits and built a bunch of stuff you’ve asked for. A big thank you to everyone who’s given us feedback, reported issues and participated in building such wonderful communities.

Today, we are announcing that the product is no longer officially in beta and are giving everyone who has used Gitter a heads up that our paid plans will be launching very soon.

We are, in some ways, mirroring GitHub’s pricing philosophy in that public conversations will be free forever and private conversations will need a paid plan, which will be available either on an individual account or for your organisation on a per user, per month basis. Conversation history for private rooms will also be restricted based on your level of plan.

What does this mean for you? Firstly, all existing private rooms will remain freely available so if you don’t want to move onto a paid plan that’s no problem, you can continue to use your existing rooms. Additionally, every organisation on GitHub will get one free private org room as part of the free plan.

Secondly, we would like to offer everyone who was a beta user of Gitter a discount code for our paid plans. This will entitle you to 50% off for 6 months. We will email out this code to everyone the day our paid plans go live.

Below is the breakdown on our plans and pricing. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any comments.

We will also be offering discounts to students and educational organisations. Please get in touch with us at support@gitter.im to receive a discount code if you’re involved in education.

Our goal is to keep Gitter 100% ad-free so that we can entirely focus our attention on building a great product without having to worry about weird money making schemes that aren’t directly aligned the vision of the company.

Thank you again for your support. As ever, please don’t hesitate to contact us for anything you need or just to say hello. We’re just putting the finishing touches on everything and will be launching the plans and a new website next week. Keep an eye out for your discount code when that happens.

Bye for now.
