Orange Sky Australia: Great Aussie Charities You’ve Never Heard Of…

Givebot spoke to Orange Sky Australia this week and learnt about their work in the field. Congratulations on the 3 year anniversary!

Orange Sky Australia
To provide a vehicle for conversations, volunteering and opportunities for our homeless friends worldwide through the provision of free showers and laundry services.

Orange Sky’s Vision:
A world where people who are homeless are positively connected to the community.

Where did it all begin?:

Orange Sky Laundry is a volunteer-based charity that commenced in Queensland in October 2014, led by two 19-year-old best mates, Lucas Patchett and Nic Marchesi. They took an old van and installed two washing machines and dryers and went to parks and drop-in centres around Brisbane to wash and dry the belongings of Brisbane’s homeless. Today, we now have 16 Laundry vans and 3 Shower vans and we’re continuing to launch a new van every few months.

Why is this a problem?: According to the 2011 census, more than 105,000 are homeless every night.

A day in the life at Orange Sky:

It’s different for everyone involved. Building new vans, fundraising, accounting, events, general enquiries, training and employment of friends — most importantly — conversations.

Impact Story:

We have a new amazing story every day! We get to have the best conversations with friends. Check out some of Orange Sky’s stories here:

What do you do with your donations?:

Continued operation of vans, their maintenance, servicing, building and launching new vans. It costs just $6 to wash and dry someones clothes and $3 to provide a hot shower.

Any upcoming events or need for additional support?:

We’re always looking for in-kind and monetary donations. We can take in-kind donations of toiletries, clothes etc at our office in Brisbane.

Are you Tax Deductible?: Yes
