sadplanet — walk

Shoegaze — music that hits you with a wall of layered guitars and washed-out vocals — is back in full force. sadplanet are five new, faithful practitioners from London, and their third single, “walk,” showcases the genre in all its beauty. Singer Kyra Ho tells her story like a distant memory, while the music reflects the intensity of the emotions.

Divine Sweater — A Time For Everything

Good band names are harder and harder to come by, with so many cool ones already taken, and I should not let my dislike for a particular hit song or band stop me from exploring a new band. That’s why I gave Divine Sweater 15 minutes of my time and not only listened to the title song of the album A Time For Everything released today but checked out a few more songs, too. Well, that is rather close to divine, kudos! This is very dreamy, chill pop, and perfect for relaxing and daydreaming a bit.

The band says about the title track and the idea of the album:

“’A Time for Everything’” is a passage commonly read at funerals. It reminds mourners that death is both an inevitable tragedy and a powerful catalyst for transformation. The song is set in that delusional mid-funeral haze when you can’t quite wrap your head around the reality and finality of death. It reimagines the spectacle of the funeral as an elaborate, illusive magic show. ‘A Time for Everything’ interrogates grief, reframing loss as a catapult toward self-actualization. It urges listeners to change their lives before it’s too late, to ‘burn it down and start all over.’’

Shealagh Rose — Radio Silence

Silence can become very loud and enraging if essential things cannot be said anymore. “Radio Silence” is a common term for that kind of situation. The Canadian singer/songwriter Shealagh Rose put this into a song, and don’t think she takes it as cool as it appears at the beginning of the song.

There is also a larger perspective to the song:

“Now, more than ever, I’m sure we’ve all experienced that feeling of isolation or feeling cut off from people; when efforts to reach out are met with an indifferent or brief response. Or even when it becomes too much that making the effort to reach out to people just becomes bothersome, leading to a vicious cycle.”

Daryl Johns — I’m So Serious

To join Mac Demarco’s live band, Daryl Johns left his home in New Jersey and moved to California. He not only plays bass in Demarco’s band but also creates his own blend of catchy indie pop that’s impossible not to like. With his new single “I’m So Serious,” the gifted musician announces his upcoming self-titled album, out on November 22, via Mac’s Record Label. “I’m So Serious” reminds me of late 70s hits, specifically Hall and Oates, so I’m curious about Darly Johns’ debut album.

aimei 媚 — Dark Arts

“Dark Arts” is about an unhealthy infatuation with somebody who seems to know how to pull all the right triggers. Trapped as she may be, it remains unclear if she even wants to escape. aimei 媚 — the Chinese character is simply her name — is a Bejing-born, London-based pop singer/songwriter, who has released a string of elegant pop songs this year. “Dark Arts” is from her second EP, out on October 25.

aimei 媚 says about the song:

“‘Dark Arts’ is about being tied into a relationship with someone who has a magnetic pull on you. Almost like black magic, it feels like a game that is so magnetic that you can’t escape. Throughout this relationship it’s almost as if this person has made you someone you don’t recognise, and then you start to embody the toxicity of this person, and alas, lose yourself within it.”

Tears For Fears — The Girl That I Call Home

Something brand new from Tears For Fears just dropped, and it is an instant TFF classic! “The Girl That I Call Home” pulls all the strings that Roland Orzabaland Curt Smith knew how to pull all these years. The song is warm, melodious, and instantly likable, and their vocals have not lost their beauty despite the singers’ more advanced age. With this single, Tears For Fears also announces their upcoming album Songs For A Nervous Planet, featuring 18 songs from their show at Franklin, TN, while touring the US last year, plus four brand new studio-recorded tracks.

On their Instagram, the Tears For Fears says, “We’ve never released an official live album, so you could say this is an album forty years in the making.” Strangely enough, I never even thought about it. While I love Depeche Mode’s 1989 released live album and documentary 101 to pieces, I am not particularly fond of live albums, but this, of course, will be different. It just makes me wish my favorite band had created a live album a long time ago (especially Roland Orzabal during his solo years!) The movie Tears For Fears Live — A Tipping Point Film comes to theaters starting October 24 and October 26.

Listen to “The Girl That I Call Home,” our Song Pick of the Day:

Carlita — Wish You Knew

Carla Frayman, aka Carlita, is an international DJ, producer, and classically trained musician. While she is known for playing dance bangers at clubs and festivals, she now wants to go the next step and release her own music. “Wish You Knew” is an atmospheric house track with the genre-typical one-line lyrics. Still, it makes you feel for her and wonder why the addressed person is so oblivious.

“Wish You Knew” is the third single off Carlita’s debut album Sentimental. Listen to our Song Pick of the Day on Spotify, Apple Music, or below:
