I Am Snow Angel — Falling Down To the Earth

New York-based songwriter and producer Julie Kathryn aka I Am Snow Angel is back with new original music after her 2019 album Mothership. In March she released the instrumental production “Elegy”, and yesterday the four-track EP “Falling Down To the Earth.” Both EPs invite you to close your eyes and let yourself be transported into a landscape of light and beauty. With its growing intensity, our Song Pick of the Day, “Falling Down To the Earth,” feels like a sunrise from the first ray of light until the world has awoken and is buzzing around you.

Julie says about the EP:

“Creating this EP was really meditative for me. It helped me cope and feel ok during the pandemic. For me, these songs are loving and reflective. They were inspired by nature, motherhood, and my deepening spiritual connection.”

Jelly Crystal — I Don’t Like Dancing

Jelly Crystal is the moniker of Stockholm-based artist Filip Johnson, who just released the irresistibly catchy “I Don’t Like Dancing” complete with a nostalgic 70s vibe. The single is out via Smuggler Music/ PIAS and much more music is to be expected in 2021 from the Swedish musician. When asked about his new track, Jelly Crystal says:

It seems like I have no chance to create hits for kids, so this is for the rest of us. Especially for the really old people that have dance band music as their pick of choice. Also, I wanted to make it clear once and for all that I don’t like dancing, I just wanted to sound like a Swedish dance band.

Okay… works for us. We won’t be dancing to the single because we’re not too keen on it either, but we can swoon a little while listening to “I Don’t Like Dancing,” our Song Pick of the Day:

SONG PICK: JÁNA — Carefree

“Carefree” is the perfect nudge if you happen to be in a relationship that goes nowhere. The way that Swedish singer and producer Johanna Andrén aka JÁNA lays out her song as light, shimmering soundscape shows how deliberating it can be when some things finally are over. There is a bittersweet undertone too, but, hey, nothing is for free in the end.

JÁNA says about the song:

“‘Carefree’ is about feeling free after a breakup or being hooked on somebody. To finally feel free in your own company and to enjoy it. It’s the last song on the EP and I wanted to bring some sort of peace and futuristic endless vision as the closing for ‘Works’.”

Cathal Murphy — Frame

“Frame” is a refreshingly smooth and instantly appealing track, and the new magnificent single by singer/songwriter Cathal Murphy. At home in Camlough, Northern Ireland, the gifted artist went to Glasgow to film his video and get also some photos done. “Frame” is the first single from Murphy’s upcoming debut EP, scheduled for June 2021. The longing and possible heartbreak are prominent in “Frame” but also the reassurance that I will always be inside of your frame. With its jazzy production, the song even takes on a lighthearted feel, and renders itself absolutely irresistible!

When asked about his single release, Murphy says:

‘Frame’ paved the way for the rest of the EP. I wanted it to reflect the mutual support in a relationship as well as the comfort that comes with that. I think that it can be pretty easy to get caught up in what can tear you apart, but ‘Frame’ is looking to acknowledge what keeps you together. It’s about being constant despite whatever challenges may come to light. I have your back, you have mine… it’s a romantic sentiment at heart rather than contractual.

Beautiful and deep sentiment transformed into a crisp and catchy song. Listen to “Frame,” our Song Pick of the Day:

Check out the video too which highlights Murphy’s guitar chops and vocal skills, albeit it misses the rad bass action at the end of the track. Nonetheless, watch it here:

Skylar Capri — Maybe We Should Run Away From Here

“Maybe We Should Run Away From Here,” a line like this has probably crossed your mind not only once lately. But Florida-based singer/songwriter Skylar Capri wants you to take this thought and turn it into a fabulous summer road trip. Put your headphones on, crank up the volume and picture yourself in a convertible driving down the road to a place where things a careless and easy. Promised, you’ll be in a better mood after.

Alex Frankel — Still Got It

“Still Got It,” the new single by Alex Frankel, is glistening with feel-good sparkles and is as much an affirmation as it is an optimistic view into a (pandemic-free) future. If the artist’s name doesn’t ring a bell, you simply need to listen to the fantastic track, and then it hits you: “I know these vocals!” Of course, you do; they are from New York indie synthpop duo Holy Ghost! and Alex Frankel is one half of the beloved duo.

Holy Ghost! were among my 10 favorite albums of the last decade, and I couldn’t be happier to listen to this refreshing summer banger that hits all the sweet spots: Just what it is, is what it was // Just what it was, it what it is

Abby Sage — Smoke Break

“Smoke Break” could be the prequel of Monday’s Song Pick “Carefree.” L.A.-via-Toronto singer/songwriter Abby Sage describes the time in a failing relationship before — maybe — relief sets in. When emotions are still heavy like the drums and synths in the song. But “Smoke Break” is not just a sad song. It also exudes the power and energy to get over whatever was in the past.
