Signe — Enough

We came across Chicago-born, European transplant Signe late last year with her single “Cry Wolf,” and are excited to feature her new song today. The Paris-based pop-musician raises substantial questions in “Enough.” She asks “What do you want? Is it enough?” a question, we probably all have asked ourselves multiple times throughout our lives. The track is wrapped in sparse instrumentation, giving room to Signe’s beautifully bright and clear vocals.

When asked about the background to her new single, Signe says:

“Enough” was written slowly over the course of the first quarantine here in Paris. Feeling the world shut down gave me the space and discomfort to digest what my needs were. What was enough? Was I enough to fulfill myself? Without the constant over direction of capitalism and societal pressure… what did I really want and need?

I hear a follow-up single here because these thoughts deserve further exploration. In any case, I am looking forward to finding out what’s next for Signe! Listen to “Enough”, our Song Pick of the Day:

Fifi Rong — Dream On

When love does not work out, dreams can be all you are left with. With her latest song, London-based singer and producer Fifi Rong takes you to the world between sleep and awakeness, where reality and dreams merge into a soundscape full of beauty and melancholy. “All I know, I’m in love with you,” Fifi confesses — too late. She explains:

“The purity of love to me, usually happens in a dream and expires in the morning sun, unless I capture these dreams into my songs. My lyrics are subtle and subliminal but ‘Dream On’ has the most direct and emotionally brutal words. My kind of ‘direct’, though, still multi-layered metaphors. Like every song on this album, I have just finished a Chinese version of this song too. Being able to glide through musical elements and deliveries between the two languages and cultures really allow me to fully express what I want to say with my work.”

Silvertwin — The Night Is Ours

British five-piece Silvertwin create music that is less nostalgic than seems to come from a different era altogether. Think Paul McCartney when he and his wife started the band Wings, or when Jeff Lynne and his mates formed the Electric Light Orchestra. It is hard to believe that “The Night Is Ours” is a brand new song and that there’s an entire self-titled album with nine similar tracks, scheduled to drop July 16th, 2021. The familiarity of “The Night Is Ours,” paired with the lush and utterly beautiful vocals of Isaac Shalam, create an irresistible sound that is impossible not to fall head over heels for.

Asked about their new single, frontman Isaac Shalam says:

“The Night Is Ours” is a song about the buzz you feel getting ready and going out for a night in London. 4 on the floor drums. The plonky bassline is influenced by the one on Silly Love Songs by Wings. The studio vibe was bouncing. Dan turned up jet-lagged and put down the guitar solo. Spread out around the studio, Lauric and Rado played the Congas and I played the shaker in one take. It was the most fun track to record. We were trying to channel Nile Rodgers with the funky guitar. The bridges had me and Alicia overdub lots of harmonies to create the atmospheric feel.

Morly — Dance To You

We saw Katy Morley aka Morly live in 2015 at SXSW for the first time. There she played an electronic set with a drummer, who jokingly complained that it was nearly impossible to play her programmed beats on a real drum set. Since then, a lot has happened in Katy’s life, including a move to London, and she has found a more classic style of music, like in her latest single, “Dance To You,” a moody late-night slow-dance piece. What has not changed are her intimate, vulnerable vocals that make the listener feel especially close to her music.

“Dance To You” will be on Morly’s debut album, “‘Til I Start Speaking” out on August 20 on Cascine. Watch the video here:

SILT — I Always Need A Break

Who doesn’t need a break, at times? But Always? There must be a story behind the new single by Melbourne-based indie-rock trio SILT. What inspired the utterly gorgeous “I Always Need A Break?” The band’s Jess Polain explains:

Some people just have a way of making you feel small and quiet. When I find myself lost for words when it comes to expressing or standing up for myself in the moment, there is always a level of discontentment and frustration right under the surface. So this song is really cathartic in that way!

The track’s build is familiar and cozy like a favorite sweater but then the song takes some unexpected turns and showcases exquisite guitar work, all held together by Polain’s emotive and earthy vocals. Listen to “I Always Need A Break,” our Song Pick of the Day:

Spaces of Disappearance — Bad Things

Elaine HD aka Spaces of Disappearance is fed up with holding back and is ready for all those “Bad Things” we were supposed to avoid for so long. The Barcelona-via-Chicago singer and producer, known for songs on the darker side of synth-pop, turns to hard-hitting electronics in the style of early Human League for her latest track. However, the vibe is more about partying hard than anything else, as Elaine explains:

‘Bad Things’ is a romp; it’s a wildly energetic anthem devoted to fun. This song represents all the energy held inside during the pandemic and the joy of reconnecting with others and with the world. It is my love song for community and nightlife which I missed very much this past year.”

“Bad Things” is the first single off an upcoming EP. Listen to our Song Pick of the Day below:

Shady Groves — Smoulder

Michigan artist collective Shady Groves landed on our radar in 2016. Their guitar-driven sound instantly resonated with us back then and still does. Throughout the years, the two founding members Adam Fitzgerald and Dylan Caron, expanded the band as seemed fit, but with life throwing its curveballs (or lemons?), they are currently back to their initial lineup as a two-piece. While “Smoulder” is a sizzling hot love song, the sentiment expressed could also go for the changes in their band formation:

I know things are gonna change // But then, they can’t stay the same… can they?

Change is among the few things in life that are a certain constant!

Although not released as a single per se, we decided to feature “Smoulder” as our Song Pick of the Day because it beautifully showcases the blissful dreaminess of Shade Groves’ songs. “Smoulder” marks track number seven on the band’s aptly named 10-track sophomore album Dreamboat (among our favorite albums of 2021). It is easy to get lost in the mesmerizing haziness of “Smoulder” and happily indulge in its utter beauty.
