“Wake in Fright” is a beautifully crafted song, made of chiming guitars, humming drum beats and charming vocals contrasting with the more intense lyrics. Slightly nostalgic and with an instantly likable feel, “Wake in Fright” is the debut single by London duo Desert Planes. While the name ‘Desert Planes’ is still somewhat new to the indie-rock scene, Tom Farrer (vocals) and Ben Niblett (drums) have been making music within other formations before they teamed up and gave their common project a go. Listen to “Wake in Fright”, our Song Pick of Monday.

Ghanaian singer Wiyaala sings in Sissala, but her message is universal: ”Peace”. And the music, an energetic blend of African melodies and dance music electronics, makes you wants you to go out on the street and laugh violence and destruction in the face. Wiyaala is a star in her home country and sets out to play the WOMAD festival this year.

How can I possibly come up with a better description than the punchline the four of Dublin’s Otherkin deliver themselves? “We want our records to be punchy, lean and blazing. Straight in, no kissing.” That pretty much sums “Yeah, I Know”, the latest single by Otherkin, up! It’s an alluring whirlwind of a song with pulsating drums, killer vocals and an unmistakably urgent yet pleasing vibe.

Kyiki’s “Here For” came out a few weeks ago, but it sticks in my mind whenever it appears in my Soundcloud playlist. It has an undeniable Massive Attack vibe with its complex beats and the decomposed synth lines, but that is just alright with me. So let’s make it our Song Pick of Thursday.

Our Song Pick of Friday is from Amaroun, a new artist from England. Her second single “Fear”, a slow-moving track which keeps suspense by Amaroun’s unique vocals: she could belt it out at any time, but she never does.

Wildlife are back with a brand new single, announcing the release of their full length album to drop later this year. “Dead Century” is a highly energetic song, with driving beats and a big anthem chorus one can’t help but instantly chime into: “It’s all been forgotten in the dead century / All is forgotten baby if you hold out for me”. This is a song about moving forward through lost time, trying to make it work without having to fully understand everything. “Dead Century” is a big sweeping song with still enough edge to keep it grounded and simply wonderful, hence our Song Pick of Saturday.

LL is a London singer/songwriter who is spot on with current trends: her music is soulful, intense and futuristic. “Let Me In”, a track from her “Cocoon” debut EP, is about going back to safety to recover and the music makes you feel that there is something dreadful that pushes her to that point.
