Promoter Pokémon: ‘Catching’ 151 People Who Love Our Product

We recently set a simple goal for our startup: find 100 people who love our product (NPS ≥ 9, a.k.a “promoters”) and have a conversation with them. We wanted qualitative user feedback to complement the quantitative metrics we’re already tracking, and to collect 100 detailed stories from people using our product.

(For context, we’re building Glide to allow anyone to create apps without code, based on spreadsheets. People are using Glide apps to run for office, map scuba diving sites, fundraise, teach meditation, manage inventory, conduct wine tours, etc. — basically anything you’d use a spreadsheet for.)

In true Glide fashion, we made a Glide app to help us ‘catch’ these users, record their stories, and stay in touch with them. We named it Promoter Pokémon and changed the goal from 100 to 151 for obvious reasons. It’s been a surprisingly rewarding practice for our team so we thought we’d share it!

In order to ‘catch’ a user, a member of our team must:

  • Find a user with an NPS score of 9 or 10.
  • Have a video call or in-person conversation with them.
  • Record their app, details, and story in our app.

After catching a user, we share their story with the team and watch our progress meter inch toward completion. Other features of the app include:

  • A ring with our overall progress.
  • Anyone on the team can add, search, and assign a user.
  • Each team member can see their assigned users on their own profile page.
  • See how long it’s been since we’ve contacted each user.
  • Text, call, or email users to schedule a catch-up.
  • Comment on user profiles, and share these comments with the team.
  • Record NPS scores, and only count users toward our goal when their score is 9 or 10.
  • Restrict access to the app to people with @glideapps.com email addresses.

This app took about an hour to make with Glide, didn’t involve writing any code, and is free to create, copy, and share.

We thought Promoter Pokémon could be useful and fun for anyone building products so we created a template that you can copy. And if 151 is too daunting, you can easily change the goal to 100 or just 10 to start 🙌.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
