#ilovemycareer Conversations with Yap Min Yen — Strategy Trust and Safety Specialist at Airbnb
Name: Yap Min Yen
Company: Airbnb
Role: Strategy Trust and Safety Specialist
How did you end up as the strategy and safety specialist at Airbnb?
I have always been interested in interpersonal relationships and when I saw the job posting on Airbnb’s website, I was intrigued. I was attracted to Airbnb’s mission of helping people belong anywhere, how Airbnb always encourages their employees to step out of their comfort zone and to be bold with decision-making.
What about your job do you love so much?
I love how there is just so much to learn, and that the fact that the industry is changing so quickly, it pushes me to be motivated and always improve myself. I also love how much control I am given over my work, and yet still have the support from my leaders and mentors when in doubt.
What is a typical day at work like, at Airbnb?
A typical day at work includes working on new projects and picking up soft and hard skills along the way. Ever since I joined Airbnb in May, I’ve learned so much about myself and am looking forward to building new friendships and skills as I grow in Airbnb.
What are some words you would use to describe the community/environment of Airbnb?
Energetic and fun! Though the industry is changing so quickly and we need to be flexible and adaptable, we are constantly motivating and supporting each other. Another word would be accepting, and thus there are a lot of people with different interesting stories. We are really close and I look forward to team events on weekends.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I see myself in a position where I’m a learner-leader because I truly believe in lifelong learning. I also hope to contribute to the world positively, and advocate for causes I strongly believe in such as marriage equality and rescuing children from poverty.
Any words of advice to those who are looking to pursue a career in your field?
I would say be yourself! Don’t be afraid to be who you really are and don’t be shy. There are no silly questions because it’s all about improving yourself as you grow in your career. Regardless of what industry or career you are in, the most important thing is to keep learning.
