Big Boots & a Collaborative Brew Day

In 2014, the Pink Boots Society started up International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day, also known as Big Boots Brew Day, in support of women in the brewing industry. Haven’t heard of it? Don’t worry, you will. In its second year, the amount of women and breweries participating grew exponentially. One can only imagine how it will continue to grow in the years to come.

I, for one, took part in my second Big Boots Brew Day, at Last Best Brewing & Distilling here in Calgary. Last year’s adventure took place at Tool Shed Brewing {read all about it over at Eat North}, and in 2015 it was the only participating brewery in the city. This year, in Calgary alone there were multiple locations and a pretty incredible group of women. Rock on, ladies.

As a woman in the brewing industry, I’m impressed. Beer is, as of late, a man’s world. Brewing, however, was originally done by women {founded by women, in fact!}, and it’s cool to see things changing. While I’m not directly involved in brewing {I’m on the marketing side of things, working on my Prud’homme Beer Specialist Certification… also, I am a pro at drinking the stuff.}, I could not be a bigger advocate of craft beer and the people who make it happen. It’s a beautiful thing.

So, as I sit here with a pint in hand, in the taproom of one of my favourite breweries, chatting with fellow Big Boots Brew participants, I think of all of the deliciousness that is to come. The opportunities, the adventures, and changes that are within reach.
