Brief Description of Organization: ATECH is a for purpose initiative with a mission to develop the startup and technology ecosystem in Aruba and the Caribbean region through community, an annual tech conference, a startup accelerator and seed funding. We leverage our global network of investors and ecosystem-builders to provide entrepreneurs in the region with an alternative launch pad. In other words, ATECH is a collaborative platform to help the Caribbean leapfrog onto the global stage.

Our next generation ATECH Volunteers are the best!

What inspired you to start this organization? The Aruban entrepreneurial community inspired me. I have witnessed the birth of a grassroots movement, where young entrepreneurs have decided to take action towards a future of innovation emanating from their desire to contribute to the global economy. This phenomenon is rare in Caribbean culture. There is great momentum in the region and this creative energy needs to be fueled to drive this movement forward. I’m excited about the startups I’m seeing in the Caribbean. There is no reason why the next big thing in travel or financial inclusion cannot be birthed in the Caribbean.

What is the next big step you hope to help your organization reach? next big step for ATECH is the launch of our first accelerator program in Aruba this September focused on travel tech. We aim to provide a high-value and practical program to support innovative ideas and social enterprises in the travel & hospitality industry. Because of the existing advanced infrastructure supporting tourism, Aruba is an ideal meeting place for entrepreneurs/investors and a good place for entrepreneurs to test their (alpha and beta) products or services with industry experts.

What has been your biggest obstacle as an entrepreneur? My biggest obstacle was mindset. Particularly at the beginning of my journey, I experienced what I call “chronic impostor syndrome”. I eventually overcame this by accepting it for what it is and by working through it with mindset work. As entrepreneurs, the walls we build ourselves confine us. Being aware of this is key to change the way we think and achieve our goals.

What advice would you give other emerging entrepreneurs? The single most important step on the road to building your legacy is to get clear on your values and the things that matter to you. Your values feed into everything you do and influence every decision you make. They motivate during challenging times and provide a level head during times of success. Share them with your team, post them on your website, and most importantly, wear them on your sleeves.
