GlobaliD is thrilled to announce that it has joined the Cardea Project’s steering committee as part of Linux Foundation Public Health (LFPH).

Our participation in the Cardea Project as a founding member highlights our ongoing commitment to provide users ownership and control over their identity and data — in this case, around health testing and vaccinations to facilitate international travel.

Cardea was launched by GlobaliD partner Indicio:

Cardea is a complete ecosystem for the exchange of privacy-preserving digital credentials, open sourced as a project in Linux Foundation Public Health. Launched by Indicio.Tech, Cardea provides an easily verifiable, trustworthy, unalterable proof of health tests or vaccination that can be shared in a privacy-preserving way. Cardea easily integrates with existing health systems to ensure trusted data sources for credentials and uses decentralized identity technology to enable better control of data for individuals. Cardea recently announced its first reference implementation in partnership with SITA for the island of Aruba.

As part of this ongoing initiative, the Linux Foundation today announced the launch of the Global COVID Certificate Network (GCCN) with Indicio as an initial supporter, among others.

The goal of the GCCN is to “to facilitate the safe and free movement of individuals globally during the COVID pandemic. GCCN will establish a global trust registry network that enables interoperable and trustworthy exchanges of COVID certificates among countries for safe reopening and provide related technology and guidance for implementation.”

More about the GCCN:

With the go-live of the EU Digital COVID Certificate (previously called the Digital Green Certificate), the lack of a global trust architecture and ready-to-deploy tools to build compatible systems in other countries could not be more clear. LFPH is launching GCCN to address this gap, with an initial focus on safely reopening borders between EU and non-EU countries. It follows and operationalizes the Interoperability Blueprint (the “Blueprint”) of the Good Health Pass Collaborative (GHPC), an industry coalition that has defined principles and standards for COVID certificates. LFPH has co-led the process drafting the Blueprint, which was released on Monday for a period of public review.

So what does this all mean?

Between Cardea’s verifiable credentials platform and the GCCN registry to promote standardization and interoperability, we’re that much closer to having a portable identity that works (and facilitates travel) across borders — all while giving users ownership and control over their identity and data.
