We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Trusted Airdrops on GlobaliD.

Every crypto project faces the same challenge: How to strategically or fairly distribute tokens to their users.

A common practice is called an airdrop — giving away tokens to users who qualify for certain terms or accomplish certain tasks. For example, Uniswap, a decentralized exchange, created one billion governance tokens and airdropped 15% of them to anyone who had used the protocol up to that point — 400 UNI tokens in total, at the time, worth about $2000.

Airdrops are a great way to distribute tokens to your most active and engaged users while also helping to promote and market the project.

But as airdrops have gained in popularity and prominence — and with significant money at stake — these distributions are increasingly vulnerable to people gaming the system, undermining their equity and effectiveness. When bots sabotage your airdrop, it compromises the strategic intent of the token distribution.

For any project, the goal is to reach engaged users that are real people. Naturally, that extends to NFT drops, DeFi platforms, and DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) as well.

Trusted Airdrops

By introducing self-sovereign identity to airdrops, you can now guarantee that real people receive tokens rather than bots in a privacy preserving way. It’s the natural symbiosis between decentralized finance and decentralized identity.

With GlobaliD’s Trusted Airdrops, developers can quickly and easily verify that wallets belong to real people.

Users that receive airdrops can conveniently verify themselves and participate in exciting new projects without compromising ownership or control over their identity or their data. GlobaliD never sees users’ private data, which is encrypted and decentralized.

The process is simple and straightforward:

  1. Developers create a signup link for their airdrop through GlobaliD
  2. Recipients follow the link to verify their identity
  3. Recipients add a wallet and get their drop

You can learn more about the process here:

For projects building on XRPL, they can leverage GlobaliD’s native integration with XUMM Wallet, the most popular XRP wallet in the ecosystem that boasts over 200,000 active users.

It’s also incredibly cool to see the many projects come up with hacky solutions for custom needs. After all, GlobaliD is an open platform that we’ve designed to empower developers of all kinds.

The GlobaliD vision

At GlobaliD, we’re committed to figuring out how self-sovereign identity can enable safe, secure and efficient inclusive finance.

The origin of this project was actually fueled by organic market demand — when the Strategy Engine project leveraged GlobaliD for their own airdrop.

With the success of that third party project, we wanted to quickly figure out a way to make Trusted Airdrops more convenient and accessible for developers. In just the last few weeks, we’ve seen dozens of projects choose GlobaliD through word of mouth.

In order to meet and address that demand, we’re actively working toward improving our documentation and developer support. That starts with the Trusted Airdrops landing page, but it’s just the beginning.

It’s also just the tip of the iceberg for what’s possible with GlobaliD and the entire suite of tools available for developers. That includes GlobaliD Groups for building communities as well as the GlobaliD Wallet for payments.

We’ve also been working with a handful of DeFi organizations to address some of their biggest challenges — all while maintaining the decentralized spirit of their platform.

That includes:

  • ID verification for compliance (Green DeFi or XeFi)
  • Elimination of bots, scams, and bad actors on the network
  • Protecting their master nodes and protocols

So stay tuned for more exciting releases in the very near future (including a noncustodial wallet) as we look to make self-sovereign identity more useful for more people.
