As a young leader, Awele Otakpor cares about the Sustainable Development Goals because these goals are the future. Each of the goals looks independent at first glance, but they all depend on each other and in order to achieve them, she thinks we need Goal 17. A passionate young woman from Nigeria, Awele cares about the SDGs because she wants a better future for the coming generation. A world where there are equal rights for all, better climate and environment and most of all global peace, because the time to act is now.

We at Global Impact Network are constantly in the search for young motivated people who go beyond their dreams and capabilities, and when we heard her story, we thought that was exactly the voice we needed alongside our Ambassador team.

In 2019, Awele volunteered with an NGO called “READ A BOOK NIGERIA INITATIVE (RABNI)” where they taught children at one of the Internally Displaced Persons camp (IDP) in Abuja every Saturday for four months.

“We taught them English and presentations skills using the TEDX approach, the children had their TEDX presentation where able to get scholarships for their education. This year I am currently volunteering with SKILLS AFRICA NETWORK we are advocating for women’s health, we are supplying Sanitary pads and discussing good health and well being across various IDP Camps across the capital especially now during the pandemic.”

In supporting the children’s programme at the camp in 2019, she was watching the hit HBO Series GAME OF THRONES and there was a hashtag on line asking ”what are you doing for the throne”…she took wordings from the series and made items and sold them to raise money for QUALITY EDUCATION, its a moment in her life she would never forget, she was able to raise about N55,000.00!

“I am a Civil Servant, in my office I talk to the cleaning company on how to improve the environment in terms of waste and plastic, I also do this at home. I also discussed with my flat mate on effects of plastic on the environment and now we recycle daily at home.”

We asked Awele,

Why are you well suited to become one of 100 of the world’s first Global Impact Citizens?

And she put it so eloquently-

“To prepare for the world ahead of us, the next generation of leaders must be skilled and have innovative ideas that can impact their community, I am a young leader equipped with such skills and ideas. I cannot describe a better experience, professionally or personally. It is a once in a lifetime experience. In addition, I look forward to be globally connected to other impact citizens, where we can forester sustainable ideas for our various communities.”
