“If the love doesn’t feel like 90’s R&B I don’t want it” -My t-shirt

As much as I love social media, when using it, I always try to steer away from my personal life. I may quote things or make general statements that apply to everyone, but I never delve into how these posts apply to me.

Honestly, the most I’ve done is talk about things that could easily be googled or seen on another social media handle (like my spring break in Miami… but who really cares about that?). However, this week I did something outside of my comfort zone and the feedback brought me to tears.

I opened up and shared my fitness journey. I let down my wall and told my Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram about my insecurities regarding my body and how I overcame them through prayer and perseverance.

This may seem minuscule to some, but it was a big deal to me and I soon learned there were many other women on my timeline who had the same struggles. People even went as far as telling me how inspiring it was and began asking me for tips. I realized there were people out there who really valued me and valued me even more just by sharing that tidbit about my personal life. My post has around 379 engagements and counting, and it hasn’t even been 24 hours yet! This doesn’t include the messages I have received either.

I’m just so happy that I could inspire and help someone and I have realized that it wouldn’t be possible if I didn’t become a little more transparent. Will I do it again? I honestly don’t know since I’m not 100% comfortable with it but maybe this could be a lesson for those who do want more engagement, including companies.
