A change in coming to nightlife in livey San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In response to a shooting and a stabbing the mayor – Mayor Romero – is forcing bars and nightclubs to close at 2 a.m., instead of, 4 a.m. It must be noted that the incidents did not take place prime nightlife area Old Town, which is the street of Calle Forteleza. It’s quite the San Juan nightlife scene there, with small and medium-sized bars lined up side by side, many of which just a few hours earlier were calm restaurants with diners.

Locals are not happy about the mayor’s decison, which will take place in November. Many point out that people will still be able to hang out in the streets with no “go home” time and that is will create a change in the culture in which people will simply start their bar hopping and drinking earlier than is the custom.

The rule does not apply to hotel bars, so people could simply go there creating new late-night hotspots for locals and tourists.

Still, the mayor is pressing on with this new restriction on San Juan nightlife and the policy will be reviewed afer six months.
