Recently Mark Cuban, billionaire technology investor and owner of the Dallas Mavericks tweeted out a warning that automation would soon cause disruption in employment, leading to job loss across the board and that industries needed to prepare. He linked an article from the likes of Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Stephen Hawking that discusses the future of automation, robots, and artificial intelligence’s impact on the job market. While these warnings are certainly indicative of massive change sweeping through automation and robotics and their effect on industry, all is not as dire as it may first seem.
While these influential and high profile individuals are right that automation has greatly affected areas such as manufacturing and is slowly spreading to other industries, there are still opportunities to find within these growing industries. For every developed piece of automation that may displace a human worker, other jobs will arise that are directly related to automation itself. We may reach a day where robots build robots and maintain themselves, but those days are still a long way off.
