Automation is an Opportunity

Recently Mark Cuban, billionaire technology investor and owner of the Dallas Mavericks tweeted out a warning that automation would soon cause disruption in employment, leading to job loss across the board and that industries needed to prepare. He linked an article from the likes of Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Stephen Hawking that discusses the future of automation, robots, and artificial intelligence’s impact on the job market. While these warnings are certainly indicative of massive change sweeping through automation and robotics and their effect on industry, all is not as dire as it may first seem.

While these influential and high profile individuals are right that automation has greatly affected areas such as manufacturing and is slowly spreading to other industries, there are still opportunities to find within these growing industries. For every developed piece of automation that may displace a human worker, other jobs will arise that are directly related to automation itself. We may reach a day where robots build robots and maintain themselves, but those days are still a long way off. In the meantime, preparing yourself for the automation revolution with the skills to work with it instead of against it will put you in a position to excel in this changing climate.

With skills in software development, robotics maintenance and repair, engineering, and others that align with this new swell of industrial change, you will be better prepared to succeed within a changing global economy. Here’s a great example of how replacing one job may mean jobs for others. Drone delivery, from the likes of Amazon and even UPS are currently being developed. While a small squadron of drones accompanying a UPS truck will allow that driver to do the work of 10 with the drones flying away from their mothership, delivering packages within a 30 to 45 minute flight away from the truck, and then returning. While this may replace drivers, it opens up employment to service and maintain the fleet of drones that UPS will then employ. It opens up the opportunity to work for companies that build and develop the hardware and software that accompanies these drones. In other words, it creates a whole new field of employment that someone with the right skills can leverage.

GRN Chapel Hill can guide you down the path toward career success in these growing industries. While the economy is changing due to automation, it will open up new opportunities for someone who is prepared. Contact GRN Chapel Hill today to find out more.
