After our short return jaunt in Ulaan Baatar it was relieving to re-board the train and move onwards, despite the fact that it was still Christmas day and we all had family back home celebrating without us.

Our Christmas so far hadn’t really been white, with only a dusting of snow around the capital, and had been a bit too smoggy for our liking, so the train was a better place than most to have an impromptu celebration of our own.

And as the ‘Cultural Group’ (the yuppie Sundowners tour sharing a similar itinerary to the Vodka Train) was also travelling in our carriage, we ate well from the leftover scraps of their pre-packed Christmas dinners, if the happy faces looking up from feed trays below are any indication!
