Who are Global Shapers?

The Global Shapers Community is fundamentally built on the belief system that young people are central to problem solving, long term policy making and working toward impactful change.

Born out of the World Economic Forum, the community has over 425 hubs in 171 countries across the world working locally on addressing issues pertaining to:

  1. Climate and Environment
  2. Equity and Inclusion
  3. Education and Employment

In each city the shapers self organise to identify and work towards addressing the issues of their community. Shapers come from different expertise, education, backgrounds, etc but are unified by their desire to bring change.

Global Shapers Bangalore hub has been active since 2012 and has since worked on numerous projects pertaining to Future of Work, Environment, Education, Sustainable Fashion, Mental Health, etc.

Bangalore hub is a close-knit community with a shared sense of purpose. By engaging regularly on its own projects as well as collaborations with other like-minded organisations the hub is committed to achieving various Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) set by the United Nations.

Some of the hubs ongoing projects are:

  1. Education and Employment

a. Stronger Schools: It is a movement started by Global Shapers Bangalore Hub to bring value-added services to students in low-income schools.

b. Happy Newsletter: With an ever-increasing amount of scary, confusing and unpleasant news that kids are exposed to, there is a need to counter it with hope, positivity and joy. The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically reduced our ability to listen to children. This project aims to involve the voice of children during this difficult time and mould them into responsible community leaders. The Happy Newsletter Project is a periodic online resource aimed at building empathy, resilience and hope in children and youth around the world.

c. Future of work: The project aims to equip young people with 21st century skills to help them prepare for the Future of Work Bring together resources to help Global Shapers Hubs drive discussions in their communities. This is a project co-founded by Global Shapers Bangalore and involving Global Shaper Hubs in each major continent

2. Equity and Inclusion

a. Mental Health: We have a lot of youth with lived experience. One common realisation is the need of more empathetic listeners within our communities as peer support. This initiative seeks to offer sessions for free for youth beneficiaries who cannot afford professional mental health services. The sessions are to be delivered by volunteers across the globe in their local communities, after having received training from credible organisations. We additionally organise webinars, workshops, and other discussions on pressing mental health issues in various scenarios.

b. Shapers Poetry Night: This project creates a space where connections happen, be it through people and poetry. Our aim is to address the feelings of isolation and loneliness during this time of lockdown and uncertainty. We have dedicated our previous evenings to the EU #letsunite project, Black Lives Matter that highlights the values of solidarity, cooperation, and peace. Participants share their favorite poems, or even their own original poetry. We convene for our poetry reading on Instagram Live for 1 hour each month.

b.Claiming the Future (CTF) - Building an Inclusive 4IR: The Fourth Industrial Revolution brings with it the challenge of reskilling, upskilling and redeployment of all human capital. In this context, women and other marginalized gender groups are particularly vulnerable due to the enormous structural disadvantages they face, be it in education, skills development, professional know-how, or even something as fundamental as safety and mobility. As these groups encounter new challenges layered over long-established ones, there exists a risk of their being left behind in terms of socio-economic advancement when dealing with transitions brought by the future of work. Overall, the project hopes to effectively facilitate the transition of 20,000+ women and other gender minorities into the future of work and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

3. Climate and Environment

a. Shaping Fashion: The Shaping Fashion project’s vision is to lead and accelerate a sustainable revolution in the fashion industry globally. Aligning with our strategic partners, we want to work together to reshape the fashion industry to acknowledge where our clothes are sourced, produced and consumed, so that our clothing is made in a safe, clean and ethical manner. From citizens to industry professionals, we believe that we all play a role in creating a better fashion industry. By driving awareness, creating open-source educational tools and collaborating with stakeholders across the industry, we strive to bring youth perspectives from a diverse background of Global Shapers. This includes designers, political economists, lawyers, engineers, humanitarian workers, and impact investors. We aim to shed light and inspire action amongst the community with one goal: Building a movement that has previously impacted over 100,000 human lives through systemic and policy reforms in today’s fast fashion industry.

b. The KASA Story: Bangalore city’s garbage has doubled in the last five years. The city churns almost 6000 tonnes per day. The Kasa Story is raising awareness to reduce the city’s waste generation by running awareness and social media campaigns, curating waste-to-art, conducting talks and publishing blog posts. The project encourages people to take their first few steps to reduce their daily consumption and waste production and help them to make the transition to sustainable living, thereby helping people to become more mindful of their consumption and waste.

c. Future of Water: the project is about tackling the water crisis today by addressing the reasons why so many people are being left behind and safeguarding the future of clean water.

d. Call for Earth: this project, aims to educate, influence and encourage individuals, corporates, government and other key stakeholders to take climate action.

e. The M.A.S.K Project: The M.A.S.K. (Make and Sew Kindness) Project is an effort to change public behaviour around the usage of masks in times of COVID-19 crisis. The lack of hygienic masks for the general public and single use mask production causes severe public health and environmental effects. Moreover the consumer is unaware of the effects of excessive consumption and improper handling of masks. The initiative serves to mitigate the environmental impact of single-use masks and redirect existing PPE resources to front-line medical staff.

4. Other Projects

Collaboration events with partner organisations and outreach program called ‘Meet the leaders’ which is a closed-door meeting with eminent leaders from various industries, fields and expertise.
