1. 24 Hours of Reality: Bangalore Watch Party

Global Shapers, Bangalore in partnership with Climate Reality Project hosted a special viewing event to watch the live streaming of the Indian segment on 4th December from 3:30 PM — 4:30 PM, which was followed by panel discussion involving Mr. HC Sharatchandra and Mr. CB Ramkumar as speakers and moderated by Sanjana Kallesha, Bangalore hub’s first Climate Reality Leader

In this hour, we explored how India as home to several of the world’s most air-polluted cities and intensifying heat waves and monsoon seasons, sits squarely in the crosshairs of the climate-health crisis. So, it’s not surprising the nation has forged ahead on solar development. The event also featured a live presentation by Vice President Al Gore, an in-depth look at the formation of the International Solar Alliance, and conversations with Dr. K. Srinath Reddy, the president of the Public Health Foundation of India, and World Health Organization regional director Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh.

More details about the event on Sanjana’s blog post which got featured on Climate Reality Project India website

MENTAL HEALTH — Awareness Initiatives

SDG covered: #3

Mental health remains a taboo in many societies. Today, the World Health Organization estimates that 25% of people worldwide will experience a mental disorder at least once in their lifetime. Yet, two-thirds of people with mental illnesses never seek professional help because of stigmatisation, neglect and/or ignorance.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, and the theme for 2018 was “Young people and Mental Health in a changing world.”

Rabat Hub (Morocco), Casablanca Hub (Morocco), Bangalore Hub (India) and Fortaleza Hub (Brazil) joined forces to spark a global campaign on the stigma that surrounds mental health.

Using social media as a tool for conversation, Shapers shared their testimonials through videos and encouraged the world to share their stories too — with the hopes that people would no longer suffer alone in silence. The Campaign with videos recorded in 6 languages reached 11,500+ viewers during the week of World Mental Health Day (Oct 2018).

After the launch of the campaign, other hubs and Shapers from around the world joined the collaboration, started a WhatsApp group to keep the conversation going throughout the year, and are working on new projects to destigmatise mental health.

LonePack Letters

LonePack letters is a campaign that aims to bridge the gap in mental health dialogue. LonePack Letters was started in 2017 with a purposeful aim of encouraging people to become more vocal in their support for mental health issues. As part of the campaign, people are encouraged to write or draw handwritten letters that would bring a smile to the faces of people reading them. We collect these letters and after vetting them, place them at various public spaces all over the city for unsuspecting people to pick up and read. The envelopes contained a note highlighting the widespread prevalence of mental health issues and how a few words of support from a loved one can go a long way.

In its third edition, the campaign was supported by Uber Eats wherein a letter was included along with meal deliveries across Bangalore. During the latest edition, over 20,000 letters were distributed in Bangalore, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram. Several schools, colleges, and workplaces in Bangalore participated including NCBS (TIFR), TFI schools and the Raintree Global group of schools.
