A second chance for people in prison
Summary
Every year around 6000 people in Moldova are finishing their imprisonment period and their social/economic inclusion is at its lowest level. Often, they work in construction or other non- official jobs and are unable to get a well-paid job, with better conditions.
As a solution, Global Shapers Chisinau Hub, in partnership with local organizations such as Drupal Moldova Association and Penitentiary NR 9 and 16 forms Chisinau, is working on developing a beginner level curriculum for a pilot course dedicated to young people in the last phase of their imprisonment, which will allow them to continue with a cycle of development courses and make them competitive on the IT labor market once they leave the prison.
Main Goal
Offer quality beginner knowledge in IT for young people in the last period of jail.
Objectives
- Create a replicable teaching curriculum in IT for people in jail.
- Identify 5 people in jail, eager to study IT and change their life after imprisonment by providing them tools and acknowledgment about emerging technologies.
- Awaken curiosity about technology as a way of living and find labor opportunities.
Problem
Every year around 6000 people in Moldova are finishing their imprisonment period and their social/economic inclusion is at its lowest level. Often, they work in construction or other non-official jobs and are unable to get a meaningful and well-paid job, with decent conditions.
Implementation
As a solution, Global Shapers Chisinau Hub, in partnership with the Drupal Moldova Association and Penitentiary NR 9 and 16 from Chisinau, is working on developing a beginner level curriculum for a pilot course for people in the last phase of their imprisonment period. Which will allow them to continue with a cycle of development courses in order to make them competitive on the IT labor market once they are out of jail.
The project will be divided into 3 main phases:
Initiation phase:
During this phase, a partnership agreement will be signed by the Global Shapers Chisinau Hub, Drupal Moldova Association, Penitentiary Nr. 9, Penitentiary Nr. 16 and the Ministry of Justice. This Agreement will give access to the project team to identify the potential students, have access to the penitentiaries, organize classes and mentorship, as well as providing temporary materials for learning (i.e books).
As well in this phase, Drupal Moldova Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, Penitentiary Nr.9 and Nr. 16, with the guidance of Global Shapers Chisinau Hub, will develop the curriculum, approve it and prepare the materials.
Last part of this phase will be to identify the partner companies, that would agree to support the project financially.
Implementation phase:
Part 1
Identified the number of prisoners in jail that are interested in learning Quality Assurance, ( Manual testing for IT), two information sessions have been held with the presence of a Quality Assurance Teacher with the prisoners, managed by Global Shapers Chisinau Hub in collaboration with the Miniter of Justice, Drupal Moldova Association and Private IT companies.
The second part of the information session was to test the capabilities and level of knowledge of the people interested, running tests such as Personality test, IQ test, Logic Test, and Basic QA exercises.
After having the meetings, the teacher created the curriculum for the QA courses.
Part 2
This phase will be the execution of the courses themselves, frequency and period are to be defined with the stakeholders during phase 1.
Follow Up
An important phase for the project will be to continue working with them a period after their prison time ends. They will have free access to the courses from the Drupal Moldova Association. Mentorship programs will be defined, in order to help them improve their skills. And if identified as needed, another cycle of training and courses will be organized in order to prepare the participants to get hired.
Impact
- Keep updated with the emerging technologies and job opportunities in IT, specifically in Quality Assurance and Manual Testing to at least 5 people in prison, that are about to finish their sentence period.
- Awaken curiosity about Quality Assurance positions as a way of living and be self-sustainable after imprisonment period.
Since this is going to be a pilot project, it is planned to be replicated and improved each edition.
