A printed deck of 26 doodles covering various hygiene scenarios

Since early January, the Coronavirus pandemic is spreading exponentially. Most awareness campaigns and advertising are focused on adults. But, what about the children?

As the novel coronavirus disease, continues to spread, it’s important for adults to communicate calmly with children. The well being of children becomes prime focus in this time of crisis. But how should I tell the child what is a “Quarantine”? How to wear a face mask or How to make sure they keep wearing one? What should they do and what should they not? How do I get my message across? Thinking of a way to protect and edutain them during the unprecedented time, we created this in partnership with Pykih and Learning Synapses.

This could help move your child to follow your cues and effect a change in their hygiene routine. This may not be the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but it’ll help your child understand why it is necessary.

How visuals help in driving behaviour change?

Research says an idea needs to repeat 200 times before brain picks it up. These cards aim to emphasise repetition and lower the cognitive load for a child to learn.

Children between two to six years are artists and thinkers. However, an abstract idea like a virus needs a concrete representation for them. The visuals will help your child imagine abstractions and visualise ideas and answer the question “Momma, what is a Virus?”.

Our Approach

  • What are these cards? This deck of 26 visual cards are carefully designed to simplify complex information like hygiene and immunity so that it is easy for children to recall and remember which eventually leads to change in behaviour
  • How we designed them? Our young learners are quick to comprehend concepts represented in a simple and visually stimulating way. Taking away the over stimulation of colours and animations, doodles help drive the
  • When to use it? These compact-sized cards are easy to carry. Introduce and discuss agreeable behaviours. During the day, each time the child forgets or makes a mistake just re-visit the relevant card
  • How to use them? Best used as one to one tool with you and your child. Place the creative doodle facing towards your child while you follow the A(sk) — L(listen) — E(laborate) approach. It’s also important to be consistent and remind kids to wash their hands with warm, soapy water after playing outside or before meals, and to try to avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths while showing the card which helps them recollect. These routines are lifetime health habits that kids will carry with them
