Young people give us a reason to create a better world and put our hope in the future. Despite their odds, young people everywhere act as peacemakers and agents of change in their own communities, which is why the UN’s theme for this year’s International Youth Day is ‘Youth Building Peace.’ During GlobalGiving’s first ever Youth Week campaign, we’d like to introduce eight amazing nonprofits working with young peacebuilders from all corners of the world!

Ultimate Frisbee For Good

Ultimate Peace’s Leader-In-Training project connects Arab, Jewish, and Palestinian youth leaders in areas where teens live among cultural and physical divides. Using Ultimate Frisbee as their tool, Ultimate Peace strives to develop friendship, understanding, and leadership through their 3-year social, educational, and athletic program.

Set Up (Peace) Camp

Working with youth in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Center for Peacebuilding’s Peace Camp inspires its campers to facilitate peacebuilding activities in their own communities. During the camp, the youth leaders learn about stereotypes, the importance of caring, and practical nonviolence communication techniques.

Fairness on the Field

Fundacion Tiempo de Juego’s soccer program in Colombia empowers youth from vulnerable areas through soccer. The program integrates its core values such as fair play, group work, and tolerance into the rules of the game, hoping to create stronger communities by pairing sport and values education.

Summer Sports for Peace

SAFECO’s Rwenena Kids project provides tuition, uniforms, and all necessary school supplies to children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their summer program ‘Sport for Peace’ works specifically with rising first graders and focuses on the importance of mutual acceptance, cooperation, communication, and fair treatment.

Creating a Master-peace!

Viva a Vida’s project in Vila de Abrantes, Brazil uses art education to empower its youth leaders to build a community engaged in positive social change. Viva la Vida acts as a safe environment for young people to explore their creativity while they work within their communities conducting interviews, recording film and media, and gathering neighborhood history.

Peace Workshops for Colombian Kids

Using media, art, music, and theater, CEPALC’s project provides workshops to children all over Colombia to teach them about their rights and about building social peace in their country. Children are taught respect for all people, to care for the environment, and how to create peace in their communities with the hope that they will share the spirit of peace within their families, school, and communities.

Innovation for Human Rights

Reach Out Cameroon’s Youth Engagement Program focuses on alternative education to create innovative change makers. Young people explore their artistic side, interact with technology, and learn about critical topics within human rights and the environment.

Peacemaker program in Myanmar

In Myanmar Center for Civic Leadership’s Myanmar Peace Maker program, young leaders participate in a 10-day workshop where they learn from local activists and community leaders. Born in post-conflict communities, the youth learn how to assess threats to peace, conduct social research, and implement community based solutions.
