Summer holidays are supposed to be a magical time of travelling, partying, enjoying the sun and sea, relaxing and deep connecting with our loved ones.

And yet for many of us, they don’t live up to our expectations. That’s usually because we aren’t striking the right balance between rest and productivity. While it can be tough to find that balance — especially if in-laws, spouses, friends, and even bosses have strong opinions for how we should spend our time — there are some ways you can still get what you need.

First, figure out your natural tendencies: are you a total couch potato who wants to veg out during the holidays? Are you a “holiday humbug” who can’t resist the urge to catch up on work? Or are you the kind of person who goes overboard at enjoying the summer — saying yes to every party invitation, and family event?

Once you know what traps you fall into, figure out a plan for achieving balance.

That might mean setting goals around how much you want to sleep, how much you want to exercise, or how much you’ll allow yourself to do work. It might mean spending more time honoring old and new traditions (just make sure they are productive and restful). Or maybe it just means taking some time to process all you’ve been through during the past year.

Needless to say, the summers are a great time to de-stress yourself as well as get to know who you really are as a person and what it is that you believe in.

So when you return to the office, there’s a good chance that your creative endeavors will have sparked an idea or two for your work.
