Though difficult, times of crisis are precisely the most important time to adapt, learn new things, and reskill. Last week we held a webinar panel discussion with innovation leaders about important skills to learn during this time of crisis.

Insights:

  • We need to do better to continuously reinvent ourselves, The speed of change is super fast, are we as leaders moving as fast as the companies we lead?
  • Are we spending enough time investing in ourselves to be the leaders our companies need?
  • We often don’t have the motivation or discipline to take advantage of the information and opportunities available to us. Work on your motivation first.
  • The most resilient people are the ones who can produce with whatever they have, independent of the specific circumstance.
  • Everybody needs to have the ability to sell — to employers, to potential teammates, to investors etc. — you always need to be able to convince people that your ideas are good. There is always a business opportunity around you.
  • The future of businesses requires a variety of skills: writing a blog, interacting on social media, etc. You need to know how to operate these things so you can hire the right people for the position.
  • If you know a little bit of anything, you can solve your problems with the tools that exist today.
  • Avoid putting yourself in roles and/or having skills that will be automated out: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/07/the-skills-needed-to-survive-the-robot-invasion-of-the-workplace
  • Any skill that requires connecting people, work with human beings and require creativity will be more resilient.
  • The need for mentors is more important than it has ever been. Go through your networks, go through your experiences for the past few months. Who was with you through it?
  • As specific verticals go, AI and IOT will not suffer much. Telecoms/5G will be ok. Fintechs will prosper. Lack of cash will accelerate since people won’t want to touch cash due to COVID.
  • We are in a shakeout, only the strong will survive. Be very resilient. Think short term and long term about what you will do. Look for teachers and mentors; people you can trust. Keep alert. Make the right decisions.
