We opened up our online platform to our community to get an opportunity to present an insight on a problem they’re facing or an idea for a startup/project they are working on. They also receive expert feedback from 2 venture capital executives. Below are some highlights from the evening.

Neil RibeiroCEO, Apptivate Africa

The Pitch: Neil is working on feeding workers in Kenya with a digital meal voucher. The country has 41% smartphone penetration. The problem is that employers cannot feed and many employees end up skipping lunch altogether. Many food merchants, therefore lose a big potential market.

They are looking to expand the service in various African countries — Uganda, Zambia, Ghana, SA, Tanzania, Nigeria, etc.

Feedback: Clarify the business model and revenue generation. Create a graphic to represent the business model simply. Ask for $3.2M for 2 years in phase 1 — break this down and show ROI.

Mike — GoGo Spirit

The Pitch: GoGo Spirit offers a bartender catering service, cocktail bottles (premade high-end cocktails) and cocktail delivery services (like uber eats for cocktails). Cocktails come in a wide variety of price points and themes. Their platform is social and builds community. Starting in Taiwan.

Feedback: Think more about scalability, the model seems to be a traditional model. What’s the revenue potential outside of Taiwan? It seems to be more of a physical business. What’s the longevity post-COVID?

Ada — Gleematic A.I. RPA

The Pitch: Asian Cognitive Automation brings advanced AI to enable offices to automate many administrative tasks, including data entry and generating reports. It can read documents in Asian languages, control IT systems and analyze data and predict outcomes.

Feedback: What is the error rate? Show some sort of traction on revenue. There are two directions: the core AI product and office automation — what’s your focus and revenue generator?

Martin

The Pitch: Using AI/Machine Learning to disrupt the travel industry. Average user takes 20–60 hours to plan a trip and visits 40 websites. Huge fragmentation. They will create a fully-integrated platform for users. The platform will track, share, remember and learn about users’ lifestyles and preferences and provide suggestions.

Feedback: You got curiosity but you haven’t gotten me to trust you yet. How/why can you do this well? Show it to your investors.

Carlos — WATQ.AI

The Pitch: We’re making a predictive tool for water pollution. 40% of lakes are too polluted for fishing and aquatic life. 70% of them pollute the usable water supply. This tool will predict the sources of water pollution and compile water quality data. Revenue will come from licensing and subscription.

Feedback: Make the business model simpler and clearer. Less text, more diagrams. Make the product clear and shorten the pitch — what are you actually selling? What will the ask of $600k go towards? Show your competitors and how you are different. Make your pitch come alive with a real-life case, bring people into your pitch, not just data.
