Business Process Management
By Mauricio Tomasella and Cinthia Quiroga
Having gone through a series of incidents related to different digital products, the client realized the need to have someone with an end-to-end business process vision. And the role of BA would be the most suitable to meet those expectations.
Context
Preliminary analysis. Taking into account that the definition of the business analyst role in Globant is more focused on product than process, we had to think about how to consider the practice of the business process to meet the needs of our client. But with the least possible impact, both for the business analyst career path and for the teams working on products.
Researching. We found a few experiences, but they were for a particular purpose and not as an usual practice. Actually BABOK, as a guide, mentions 5 different perspectives(the most common ones) that are proposed for the BA role, among which are Business Process Management (BPM).
Practice
BPM is a management discipline and a set of enabling technologies that:
- Focuses on how the organisation performs work to deliver value across multiple functional areas to customers and stakeholders.
- Aims for a view of value delivery that spans the entire organization.
- Views the organisation through a process-centric lens.
Benefits
- Facilitate the knowledge and understanding of end-to-end processes and makes individuals better prepared to adapt and respond over changes.
- Create value for the company through growth, improved performance, better productivity, higher staff effectiveness, and better customer service.
- Reduce costs by avoiding waste of time and money, and also promoting good resources management.
In which context can BPM be applied to?
BPM is applicable for industries such as:
- Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI)
- Government and Defense
- Healthcare
- IT & Telecommunication
- Retail
- Other End-user Industries
Tools
To facilitate designing, modeling, implementing and measuring, thus helping companies to refine and optimise processes. See some examples:
- Bizagi: Multi-platform, with private license and requires a quote payment for multiple users.
- Camunda: Open source platform that combines microservices orchestration and human task management in process modeling.
- Draw.io: Open source technology of Atlassian suite, easy to learn with intuitive interface and works with G Suite/Google Drive and Dropbox.
Proposal
Have a community of business analysts with a business analyst leader. This community will take care of business processes within one or more business domains. The business analyst leader will coordinate the community and the dedication will be part-time.
Advantage: The work will be collaborative and the knowledge will not be centralized in one person, but will be shared among several.
Challenge: The community needs to achieve the objective set by the client. Then, the community must be challenged to understand what is the relevant information to collect, those involved and how the results will be socialised.
