When you look at certain sports, you notice that the global superstars of each sport tend to originate from the same countries generation after generation. In this article, we will explore the economic issues as to why this is the case and what blockchain decentralization can do to create opportunity for the talented athletes who are unable to make it professional for these reasons.

Football is the most followed sport in the world, there are more countries recognised by FIFA than the United Nations. Despite the abundance of professional players and international teams, players from the same countries tend to make it to the highest footballing level. The English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, the German Bundesliga and Italy’s Serie A are the four most competitive and most watched leagues globally and feature a varied number of players from various different nations. When you break it down, the world’s most recognised players tend to come from the same countries in each generation.

If we look at the Premier League as an example due to its competitiveness, we can see that the most recognised players tend to come from the same countries. British and Irish players dominate with an influx of Europeans and South Americans regularly staking their claim as the best Premier League players each season. In the last decade or so, we have also seen a rise in African players, mainly due to the notoriety of the first to come and play in English football. Leeds United signing Tony Yeboah in the mid 1990s, Arsenal signing Nwankwo Kanu in the late 1990s and Chelsea signing Didier Drogba in the early 2000s has given the top flight clubs the trust and knowledge to invest into the African market. Asians are incredibly under represented in both the Premier League and all of Europeans top divisions.

The lack of Asian players in top flight football in Europe is not due to the lack of talent. Countries like India and China will be filled with talented young players who dream of playing in these leagues. The reality is that they are not currently given that option — only the select few will be picked up by hedge funds or super agents and they do not have the financial support to be able to reach the highest level. Economic issues can prevent these players from earning trials or opportunities to play outside their own country. Without financial support, these players have to resign themselves to playing in less recognised leagues in their own country with no option to progress to the big time.

Football is not the only sport that nations can be under represented when there is undoubtedly naturally talented youngsters who have the ability to play at the same level as the superstars.

One of the highlights of many peoples summer are the two weeks of Wimbledon. On a summer’s day, eating strawberries with cream and watching the most prestigious Grand Slam is an annual tradition for some. Winners of the tournament become world renowned and allows players to cement their place in tennis history. Roger Federer, Boris Becker, Serena Williams, Pete Sampras, Martina Navratilova and Andy Murray are amongst a few of the tennis legends that broke records, won tournaments and wowed tennis fans all over the world. When you look at all the names on the list of winners of Wimbledon and of the remaining Grand Slam tournaments, you notice that they all seem to come from the same countries. Major European countries, USA and Australia dominate the lists of winners and renowned stars of the game of tennis. Africa, South America and Asia produce very few professional tennis players but this is not due to the lack of talent. This is due to economic reasons, tennis players need a large level of financial support to enter and compete in ATP tournaments. They need to raise the finance to be able to make it to the highest level and compete at the top of their game. This is not possible for many people from these continents who do not have the financial support from their families or friends.

In every single sport from all over the globe we find these issues — including these examples of nations who dominate the sports at the highest level:

Cricket — England, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand

Rugby Union — Home Nations (UK & Ireland), Argentina, Oceanic Countries, France and Italy

Golf — USA and Europe

Formula 1 — Brazil and European Countries

Even when we look at the Olympics and athletics in general — China, Russia, The United States and Great Britain always dominate the games quad-annually.

Economic Issues are strife in every sport and affect many different countries from all over the world but there is a solution.

Blockchain decentralization will change the world and in particular, the sports industry. Companies such as Globatalent will allow these talented young athletes who currently cannot make it professional in their chosen sport to raise the finances that would never have previously been made available to them. The project will allow real fans and supporters from all over the world to invest in talented sports people in every country and every sport (including cybersport) and allow them to overcome the economic issues that they are currently facing.

This can change the world of sports for the better and we can see representation of world sport changing. We could have an Indian winner of the US Open, a Nicaraguan Ballon D’or winner and Chilean PGA tour winner. The possibilities are endless and could change the face of each and every sport.

Blockchain decentralization will also make the middle men function more effective. Currently, these athletes who are highly dominating their chosen sport are supported by hedge funds and super agents who do not necessarily have the athletes best interest at heart and treat them as if they were an asset. They see the athletes as a way to make profit and will take an enormous percentage of future rights in exchange for giving them the financial start to get to professional status. The Globatalent project allows the athletes to decide their own percentage to give back to the investors thus bringing a level of transparency and fairness to sports business. This brings a level of transparency that currently is not available within the sport.

Projects such as Globatalent will be making incredible changes to the multi billion industry of sports and changing the world for the better. They will be tackling longstanding issues within the industry and in turn will create a fairer and more equal sporting world. They will use blockchain technology to bring transparency and clarity and create more opportunities for the hundreds of thousands of lost sporting talent lost each year and in turn will bring them closer to the fans who support them unconditionally.

Blockchain technology is here to stay and will impact many industries but the impact on the sports industry will bring more competition and have a long lasting affect to the future of the world.
