Ivan de Lastours -Blockchain Lead @ Bpifrance

In Episode 21 of the Globe Interview Series, we interviewed Mr. Ivan de Lastours, the blockchain, and crypto lead at Bpifrance. In this interview, Ivan speaks to us about how his computer science and finance background, along with how his previous experience as an M&A banker ‘naturally’ paved the way to his current position at Bpifrance. Additionally, he mentioned how as technology and finance merge, he sees crypto as the future of finance. We also learn what Bpifrance is, how they are entering the crypto space in France and Europe, and some of the hurdles the bank had to cross to get there. Lastly, Ivan shares his thoughts about how crypto will get into other new sectors of the economy in the years to come, such as metaverse and defi compared to where it is now, and his thoughts on the possibility of Bpifrance tokenizing assets in the future.

Bpifrance and Crypto

Bpifrance finances businesses at every stage of their development through loans, guarantees, equity investments, and export insurances. Due to some of their recent investments and direction in the cryptosphere, they have become a major supporting player in the French blockchain ecosystem. This has clearly reinforced the growing perception that public financial institutions are starting to appreciate the importance of this blockchain technology and its inevitability.

According to Ivan Bpifrance is a French sovereign or state-owned bank, ECA, and fund containing more than €27.5 billion AUM. Bpifrance’s activities in his sector are transversal support to the French blockchain ecosystem, which includes financing, equity investment, fund investment, and internal projects. To date, Bpifrance has financed more than 120 French blockchain startups and made directly or indirectly 15 equity investments, including Ledger, Acinq, Soare, Kaiko, Paraswap, Superfluid, Aletheia.ai.
