GlobeMed is turning 15 this year, and as we look back at everything we’ve done, we invited two Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) Internship alumni from GlobeMed at the University of California, Los Angeles to look back at their time with GlobeMed.

In this conversation, Nisarg Shah (GROW ‘19), and Ryan Rizeq (GROW ’17) revisit their time in GlobeMed at UCLA. They share their vivid memories about the GROW internship with the Mpoma Community HIV/AIDS Initiative, also known as MCHI. Through their GROW experience, they were able to gain invaluable leadership experience when it came to supporting both the local community and their GlobeMed peers throughout the highs and lows of the internship.

Topics discussed include: how to manage the time on site effectively and efficiently in order to maximize the amount of progress that can be made not only on a partnerships’ main goals, but also on ancillary projects that come up throughout the GROW experience; being brave while staying authentic during interns’ time abroad ; and how to practice the skills learned in GlobeMed after graduation and maintaining a global health equity agenda while pursuing careers locally.
