A Castle and Museums Galore

Days 2 and 3 of visiting Dublin

On my second day in Dublin (if you missed it, you can read about my first day here), I decided it was time to see one of its most popular sites: Dublin Castle.

The medieval section of the castle dates back to the 1200s. However, very little of this original castle still survives today — I believe only the stone tower which you can see in both the photo above and the one below. The rest of the building is an interesting hodgepodge of different architectural styles as new additions were built through the years.

No surprise here, it was originally used for British rule. For example, the photo below right was the throne room where British kings and queens held court. Sadly, during the Irish War of Independence, several members of the IRA were even tortured and killed at Dublin Castle. Finally, in 1922, it was given to the Irish, and since then, it has been used by the Government of Ireland.
