A Crazy Thing Happened On the Way to Mexico

We were an hour outside Toronto, heading south to Mexico on a jumbo jet. It was 1994. Our close friends, Mike and MaryJo, were with us. We were headed to Playa del Carmen for a week at the end of January to escape Buffalo’s cold and snowy winters.

It seemed we had just taken off when I felt a wetness in my pants. I dreaded going to the bathroom, for I sensed something was very wrong. I was not incontinent, nor did I feel like I had to urinate. But, still, something had given my underwear a wet sensation. I was early in my pregnancy, and was fearful that something I had experienced before was happening again.

I excused myself and went to the bathroom at the back of the plane. Sure enough, when I took down my pants, I saw it — blood!

Not a large amount, but enough to know that something was wrong. I was probably having another miscarriage.

Distraught and sad but in no pain, I returned to my seat. As soon as my husband saw my face, he knew something wasn’t right. I was as pale as a ghost and close to…
