Imagine waking up to this on Christmas morning?! Semuc Champey — Guatemala (Photograph credit to the author)

Getting closer and closer to the big day on our Central America trip, the question hung over our heads:

“Where are we going to spend Christmas?!”

It all started to become apparent that following our itinerary it would be in Guatemala, and after lots of toing and froing we eventually decided upon a little gem of a place called Semuc Champey, and I’m so glad that we did!

Now I feel like we couldn’t have been anywhere else!

We stayed at a hostel that was like no other hostel I’ve stayed at before. Floor-to-ceiling views of lush mountains and trickling streams, just miles of green forest. A gorgeous (if not chilly) pool with views of the valley on either side of it. We walked around with beaming smiles, squeezing hands and exclaiming that we did good.

A long chalkboard stood in the bar with a Christmas itinerary sketched onto it: a big party on Christmas Eve, followed by tubing and Christmas dinner on the day itself.
