When a person is living in another culture, not their own, learning the language is, of course, imperative. Although it takes time — the embarrassing mistakes kind of time 😜— learning the slang expressions of your region is also very important. Our journey began here in part one.

If you are living in an apartment in Australia (another country I love,) you would refer to it as “a flat.” When you’d hear the expression,“barbie,” an Aussie wouldn’t be talking about a doll, but about having a barbeque.

But, this is story is about Mexican slang expressions. So…Sale (Let’s go).

(The following expressions, of course, depend on the region of Mexico. The same is true of any country.)

¿Qué onda? You’ll hear this a lot among younger people. It literally means, “What’s the vibration?” When I was younger — like, when dirt was first invented — a common greeting among American youth was, “How’s it shakin’?” (which wasn’t actually referring to a vibration 😄)

I suppose in today’s more progressive, spiritual environment…
