In December 2019 I embarked on a solo trip to Belgium and Germany. After all, what better time to indulge in guilt-free chocolate and waffle scoffing than the holidays? I booked a hostel in Brussels as my Belgian base and honestly I really don’t think the city is as bad as some people make it out to be. But that’s another story. I couldn’t not visit Belgium without seeing at least a bit of Bruges too, which is far more popular with most tourists. And so I rose early one morning and headed over to the train station.
You can book a day trip with a tour company from the capital, but getting to Bruges on your own is actually very straightforward by train if you don’t want to be so restricted (providing they don’t suddenly change the platform last minute, that is!) I booked my tickets ahead of time through Omio but they can also be purchased direct at the station too, and the journey north lasts approximately an hour.
There’s something rather enchanting about train travel. Without exploring a country in depth you wouldn’t usually get to see the small villages and farms that decorate the majority of the landscape, pale and shimmering from the morning frosts. You wouldn’t get to see the distant skylines of cities as you depart and arrive. Towers and lakes…
