The foreign texture of the fabric enveloping me was a sudden but gentle reminder that I was drifting into consciousness from someone else’s bed. I glanced out the window and fixed my gaze upon the jagged silhouette of the bare winter tree nearby. My first sentence of the day was the same whisper as always, tailored to my location.

“Good morning, Des Moines! Today’s gonna be a great day.”

(I say that without knowing what the day holds, because every day you get to be alive is a great one. However, I quickly discovered this day—and the next—would include some plot twists.)

After a few minutes of simply enjoying the stillness of a sleeping household and my view of the world at rest, I checked my phone for notifications. There was one from my airline.

My flight out of DSM wasn’t for about 10 hours, so it was way too early for them to remind me of anything. What could this be about?

It was a notification that my flight had been canceled.
