Last year, I spent 11 unforgettable days in Iceland and was enchanted by the magic blend of its beauty. From majestic glaciers to cascading waterfalls, from rugged coastlines to expansive volcanic plains, each image etched a lasting impression.

But a top reason Iceland is such a great travel destination only dawned on me after I had left.

Some people compare the whole country of Iceland to a huge national park. This description is fitting as spectacular sceneries grace its every corner. But technically Iceland has three national parks which cover a little more than 10% of its land. All national parks can be entered at will and free of charge. Many spectacular vistas like magnificent waterfalls and sublime canyons are not within any national parks’ border.

A country is the custodian of its natural wonders. But few nail the balance between protecting and letting people enjoy them. Iceland has done a pretty good job preserving its beauty. Yet it also appears open and relaxed, allowing travelers a delightful sense of freedom.
