Cenotes of the Yucatan Are an Underwater Delight

Even the adventure parks are cool

“Have you been to any of the cenotes nearby?” The concierge at the hotel asked as he was curious about our plans for our stay in Cancun.

Dumbfounded, I waited for my husband to answer since I had no idea what a cenote was. Thankfully the conceirge could read our unknowing and went on to describe an underwater wonder.

“You must go to one! There is nothing like a cenote…”, he trailed on and began to describe his favorite destination but one that was too far of a drive.

“Dos Ojos is my happy place and it’s famous for good reason. The colors are so beautiful, the water is warm, and when I am there, I don’t want to leave.”

These cenotes, which stem from a Mayan word meaning sinkhole, connect an underground river system. Living above an underground river is something I have a hard time wrapping my mind around.

The caves of Mexico became very alluring after watching the concierge’s eyes light up with excitement. I always like to take a recommendation from a local while traveling.
