Closer to heaven at Mont Saint-Michel — author’s photo

One of the things I love the most about travel is how everyone has different expectations and must-sees wherever they go. When people think of France they usually think of the lights of Paris or the azure blue seas along the French Riviera. One of the places I have always wanted to visit is Mont Saint-Michel in southwestern Normandy.

It turns out that this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most visited locations in all of France.

It’s all built on a pile of rocks — author’s photo

The medieval town rises from a river estuary braced by the rocks it clings to. It continues to reach higher as the pinnacle of its spire, Saint-Michel, pushes through the clouds. To me, it appears magical, like something from a fairy tale or a perfect fortress in Game of Thrones.

So it’s not surprising that it made it to the top of my itinerary for a recent 3-week trip to France to mark my retirement. But it wasn’t easy getting there.
