We were entirely exhausted. It had been three days of relentless travel. From delayed flights to suburban trains, from buses to trams and finally dragging those tired feet for an extra mile… every option had been availed of, in quick succession at that.

Our planned recce to Rovaniemi had been a tactical trump card alright — especially keeping in mind the elaborate winter adventure to Lapland but also involved excess travel.

While it had no doubt been a memorable experience to book the Santa Claus Express night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, it also meant we had spent 12 hours either way on the double-decker. That translates into two nights or one full day.

It does not matter how comfortable the mode of transport is, travel fatigue cannot be avoided at any cost. Even as we stood inside Helsinki’s Rautatieasema (Central Station), thinking about our future course of action, there was a dilemma within.

To continue further… Or take a breather
