Glorious Grasmere

Exploring this Wordsworthian gem right in the heart of the UK’s Lake District

I love open-top buses. What better way to arrive somewhere than with the wind in your hair and the rain in your face? Or worse, a low-hanging branch? (Actually, the buses put warning signs on the back of the open seats nearest the side of the bus — see the yellow signs in the image below.)

The summer-running 599 open-top bus service is the best way to arrive in Grasmere. Situated near the centre of the Lake District, this small village is a scenically stunning fifty-minute safari from Bowness-on-Windermere.

Grasmere is one of the easiest Lakeland villages to get to by bus. Not only is the 599 service regular (they use fully roofed buses in winter) but it’s also served by the regular 555 Lancaster to Keswick service. Both services connect with Windermere railway station, and the 555 service also makes it possible to use railway stations at Lancaster, Carnforth, Kendal and Windermere.
