Having been forced to make an impromptu decision and head to a destination not initially planned, what mattered in the final analysis is the fact that we thoroughly enjoyed the overnight stay in Assen. Those few hours spent in the capital of Drenthe helped us to regain our composure, and do some planning for the remainder of the trip.

Following that forced detour, we were back at our primary target the next day. Having learned a lesson during a relentless search for accommodation the previous afternoon, that ended in a failure, we were not willing to take any more chances. As such, we booked accommodation for Groningen during our stay in Assen.

Once we had settled into the comforts of the room, and started exploring the city, we realized there was a hotel in the immediate vicinity that we had missed. Of course, it was a heritage building converted into a luxury hotel. So frustrated were we on the previous day that we would not have hesitated overpaying for accommodation provided it was available.
