Heroes’ Square Budapest: A Place to Learn Hungarian History

This is a must-stop in Budapest with a tour guide, preferably a local tour guide from Hungary, to help explain some of the history signified by these monuments.

While not as stunning as the castle district on the Rhine, nor as opulent as any of the Hapsburg’s residences in neighboring Vienna, Heroes’ Square lends a historical nod to the great leaders of Hungary.

Formed by three huge monuments, the Square is located at the end of Andrassy Avenue in Budapest, near City Park. We took a bus there with our tour guide, a native Hungarian, on our included Viking Longship River Cruise excursion.

Firstly, Heroes’ Square is a busy place. Other tour groups were viewing the monuments as well. Locals were hawking their handmade shawls and other wares, too.

We were provided with Audiovox quiet boxes by Viking and this was our first experience using them. The little listening device allows the tour guide to speak without shouting and be heard over the closed-channel earbuds. This allows the tourists to listen while wandering, which we did.
